3 BROTHERS MAKE QB HISTORY
by Frank Ruben,
Assistant Coach,
Saguaro High School, Arizona
Saguaro High School Senior Quarterback Teddy Ruben walked off the field just having played his last ever home football game on a chilly Friday evening in November; a convincing 56 - 7 victory in the second round of the 4A-1 State Playoffs. He would get his chance to play at least one more game as the Sabercats advanced to the semi-finals and one step closer to an opportunity to earn a 4th State Title in 5 years.
And like his brothers, Alex and Tim did before him in 2006 and 2007, Teddy's goal was to play in the championship game on December 4th, 2010 at ASU's Sun Devil Stadium and lead his team to the title.
The following week, Teddy's mission became a reality when the #3 Sabercats defeated the #2 Queen Creek Bulldogs in a semi-final game that was a rematch of a game played in the last week of the regular season. That game ended up a 31 - 28 win for the Cats. This time the Cats cruised to a 42 - 13 win and earned their date with destiny.
The stage was now set. Saguaro will face the #1 ranked Tucson Canyon del Oro Dorados who were the defending champions and brought with them a 27-game win streak. It was CDO who ended Saguaro's 37-game streak in 2009.
CDO and Saguaro played in the 2007 title game which ended up being decided by a 29-yard field goal with six seconds left to give the Cats their second consecutive title and an undefeated season. Teddy's brother Tim, also a former QBR Camper, was the quarterback for both the 2006 and 2007 championship teams. Teddy, a freshman in 2007, was part of a group that was called up for the playoffs. He watched from the sideline as Tim engineered a last minute drive to secure the win.
Teddy vowed that one day he would play in a game that would crown him champion.
That day finally arrived. December 4th, Sun Devil Stadium, 3pm kickoff. #1 vs #3. As expected, the game lived up to its billing. The first half was a slug fest. A couple of turnovers by Saguaro and CDO took a 27 - 14 lead to the locker room at half time.
Another team might have thrown in the towel or conceded, but Saguaro came out for the second half determined to "Take Back The Title," which had been their mantra since January. With Teddy running the offense, the game was tied 27 - 27 at the end of the 3rd quarter but the momentum had clearly shifted. CDO had a 12-play drive that gave the Dorados the lead to start the final quarter, but it was obvious that they were wearing down.
The Cats mounted an 80-yard drive capped by Teddy's 3-yard touchdown. Another stalled CDO drive gave the Cats the ball with four minutes remaining. The Cats moved the ball at will and with 2:25 remaining, Teddy crossed the goal line from 8 yards out to take the lead for good, 41 - 34. A last attempt by CDO to answer fell short. 50 seconds left and the Cats only had to take a knee to complete their mission!
Since I call the secondary coverages from the coaches' booth, it seemed like forever to get down to the field and look for Teddy. We finally found each other and we were both caught up in a very emotional moment. A lifelong dream had been realized.
Teddy was now in the company of his brothers who both ended their senior seasons with a gold ball in hand. Alex, Tim and Andrew were on the sideline to share in the victory. Teddy was now "one of the boys!" His brothers even joked that teddy no longer had to sit at the "kids table" for Thanksgiving!
As a dual threat quarterback in a spread offense system, Teddy rushed for 2,513 yards and 34 TD's and threw for 2,369 yards and 22 touchdowns and only five interceptions this season. The only other quarterback in Arizona to reach 2,000 yards in both rushing and passing was Teddy's brother, Tim, in 2007. Teddy cleared that bar Tim set in 2007.
When I reflect on all the success that Alex, Tim, and Teddy had during their high school years, I will ALWAYS go back to their youth football days and the foundation that was built in each one of them in their early development. One of the best pieces of advice I was given was when one of my Pop Warner coaching mentors, Marc Anderson, mentioned a camp in California that I should look into.
The Camp he suggested was QBR. The following summer Alex and Tim were campers at the California II camp. I sat in the stands that year with Teddy who was chomping at the bit to be able to participate. The next year I was given a tremendous opportunity to be on the coaching staff which I did for three years. At one point we had 16 campers from Scottsdale participate in QBR Camp.

Some of those QBR alumni are now playing college football at schools such as ASU, Colorado, Boise State and Duke, but all of them had very successful high school football careers first.
It was at the QBR Camp that these aspiring QBs, WRs, and RBs were taught the basics and fundamentals of these positions. The boys took and built their successes on what they learned and gained from these camps and coaches. The tools and resources they were provided at QBR were the same their youth and high school, and for some, their college coaches have given them as well.
For Alex, Tim, and Teddy, the invaluable knowledge gained when they were QBR Campers served as the launching point to what turned out to be three championship seasons at Saguaro High School leading up to the December 4th title game. And, as has been Teddy's boyhood dream, the fourth gold ball will be placed in the Saguaro Football Trophy case.
Dr. John Mitchell's QBR Camp Fitness Tips
Fitness: When it comes to fitness, Consistency Is King! Keep a schedule of the same time to workout. Whether at the gym, walking, or recreation time, do it at “that time” of the day. Your body will expect it and tend to become more active in anticipation of the event. Don’t make excuses!
Wellness/Self-Care: According to the World Health Organization, 80% of all cancers are from environmental and lifestyle factors. Environmental are the worse. Household disinfectants, drain/toilet/window/oven cleaners/bleach/ammonia are commonly found and used in the home. Never mix these, and always ensure plenty of ventilation. Use gloves and wash your hands after use.
Healthy Eating: This time of the year is very difficult to stay within our regular eating habits. Parties, social gatherings, professional demands, all contribute to our “taste buds straying!” The worst culprit is sugar. It’s in almost every holiday food. Enjoy the holidays, but fill up on meat and vegetables first. Use butter, it will satisfy your hunger better, to prevent over eating sugar.
