7 Benefits For Young Players, Part One

Pop Warner, Jr All-American and American Youth Football Players Develop Winning Skills At QBR Camp

by QBR Coaching Staff

The question often comes our way: how much can young players--those in sixth to eighth grade--benefit from QBR Camp's fundamentals-based, four day, overnight camp in a University setting? 47 years of annual summer training helps our staff response:

1. QBR Camp allows the development of skills without the fear of contact. (“Its hard to remember your goal is to drain the swamp if you're up to your ass in alligators”) When learning a skill, time and repetition are necessary without distractions, such as contact, so as to allow muscle memory to occur. If outside factors are introduced too early in the learning processes it can alter the mechanics of the athlete. QBR is a non-contact camp and our drills are designed to focus on one phase of a skill at a time.

2. QBR Camp starts them right early. To paraphrase, “Bring up a child in the way he should throw, and when he is a quarterback he will throw touchdowns.” QBR Camp gives young quarterbacks the best instruction in proper throwing mechanics in the country. With proper teaching and repetition, QBR Camp alumni for decades, have gone on to outstanding careers in high school, college and the NFL.

3. QBR Camp employs High School and Junior High coaches. Volunteer coaches are important to the youth programs and thank God we have them. But the professionals at QBR Camp teach the skills of football on a daily basis, and are highly trained in the development of young athletes. Who better to prepare youth players for high school?

4. Youth attending QBR Camp will also be returning to their home youth programs and sharing the skill and drills that they have learned at QBR Camp. A lot of learning can occur in an informal setting. A young camper returning home and showing his friend how he learned to catch at QBR Camp is not only the sharing of information that benefits his friend, but also reinforces the learning of the camper as he teaches what he's learned.

Next month's Goal Post: we'll see another three benefits received by a sixth through eighth grade athlete when attending this summer's 2011 QBR Camp session.

Parents Write to QBR Camp

Dear Dr. Hayes and QBR Camp Staff:

When I attended Quarterback & Receiver Camp it reinforced how important the fundamentals are to becoming a top-flight player.

My son, David, who followed in my footsteps to Stanford University, had a tremendous experience at QBR Camp.

I recommend QBR Camp to every player who wants to maximize his potential. It's unquestionably the finest camp of its kind out there.

Sincerely,

James Lofton,
NFL Hall of Fame and San Diego Chargers Wide Receivers Coach

Dr. John Mitchell: QBR Camp Fitness Guru

Fitness: The best time to stretch is after warming up. Light jogging, or upper body arm/shoulder movements, warming up the muscles, ligaments and tendons has been show to prevent injuries and improve athletic performance. Warming up will increase core body temperature and prepare the body for athletic activities. Stretch after athletic activity as well to decrease post-activity muscle/connective tissue tightness.

Wellness/Self-Care: Every home should contain basic health diagnostic tools. A thermometer, blood pressure device, reliable weight scale, blood glucose monitor, urinalysis dip sticks and cloth tape measure (waist measurement) are essential home items. Every 6 months record your health history and write the results in a folder for all family members. Significant changes would signal a need to see your doctor.

Healthy Eating: One of the best ways to eat healthy is to ensure your blood sugar stays fairly level throughout the day. Large spikes of sugar/carbohydrates from your meals will cause your blood sugar to elevate dramatically and then crash to very low levels. This will give you hunger cravings and increase the tendency to overeat. Limit the intake of breads, cereals, pasta, bagels and sugars to keep your blood sugar level throughout the day.

Dr. Mitchell's recommendations are the current, cutting-edge methods to assist our athletes and coaches in health and fitness.

Mitchell has an extensive education in biology, human anatomy, pain and injury management, fitness and nutrition. His interests include surfing, soccer, body-weight fitness and strength training. An athlete his entire life, Dr. Mitchell brings insight to the rigors of training. This is complemented by his intense interest in nutrition for human performance and disease prevention.

In addition, Mitchell is a commercial airline captain for American Airlines, piloting a B-737 throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. Dr. Mitchell's experience and enthusiasm are a new asset to our QBR Goal Post newsletter for this new decade. Welcome Dr. John!
